More Than Recreation
The legalization conversation gets framed as "should adults be allowed to get high." That misses the point. The actual stakes are criminal record expungement, small-business market access, and ending an enforcement pattern the ACLU has documented as racially disproportionate for fifty years.
What Legalization Has Actually Done
Expungement at scale
Illinois alone automatically expunged over 500,000 cannabis-related records when adult-use went live. Each one of those is a person who can pass a background check again β for a job, a lease, a loan.
Small-business and craft access
Pre-legalization, the supply chain was illicit and dangerous. Post-legalization, craft growers can build a brand. PILLOWS EXOTIC FLOWER BOX βοΈπ and SWEETZ EXOTIC FLOWER BOX π₯π are exactly that β small-batch, packaged, traceable. None of that exists in a prohibition market.
Tax revenue β public services
States with mature legal markets are now routing cannabis excise tax into school funding, road repair, and substance-use treatment. Colorado has crossed $2.5B in cumulative cannabis tax revenue since 2014.
What's Still Broken
Federal scheduling

Cannabis is still federally Schedule I, which means most banks won't touch the industry, growers can't take normal business deductions (Section 280E), and research access is bottle-necked.
Interstate commerce
A licensed grower in Oregon legally cannot sell to a licensed dispensary in California. Every state runs an island economy.
Legacy market punishment
People still serving sentences for offenses that are now legal. The Last Prisoner Project tracks these cases.
Why It Matters to You
When you buy from a licensed source, you're funding the model that:
- Pays state taxes that fund expungement programs
- Lab-tests for pesticides, heavy metals, and microbial contamination
- Lets growers like the ones behind β¬οΈTERPHOGZ 2G BUCKETS πͺ£ π―π₯ or PILLOWS EXOTIC FLOWER BOX βοΈπ actually exist as businesses
The Direction of Travel
Twenty-four states now have adult-use legalization. The federal conversation has shifted from "if" to "when and how." The work isn't done β but the momentum is real.
